After breakfast, set for a Full day game
drive,
exploring wilderness animals and ecology nature with picnic lunch in Mikumi National Park, dinner and
overnight at Tan Swiss Lodge, basing on half board basis
Mikumi National Park abuts the northern border of Africa's
biggest game reserve - the Selous – and is transected by the surfaced road
between Dar es Salaam and Iringa. It is thus the most accessible part of a
75,000 square km (47,000 square mile) tract of wilderness that stretches east
almost as far as the Indian Ocean. The open horizons and abundant wildlife of
the Mkata Floodplain, the popular centre piece of Mikumi, draw frequent
comparisons to the more famous Serengeti Plains.
Lions survey their
grassy kingdom – and the zebra, wildebeest, impala and buffalo herds that
migrate across it – from the flattened tops of termite mounds, or sometimes,
during the rains, from perches high in the trees. Giraffes forage in the
isolated acacia stands that fringe the Mkata River, islets of shade favored
also by Mikumi's elephants. Criss-crossed by a good circuit of game-viewing
roads, the Mkata Floodplain is perhaps the most reliable place in Tanzania for
sightings of the powerful eland, the world’s largest antelope. The equally
impressive greater kudu and sable antelope haunt the miombo-covered foothills
of the mountains that rise from the park’s borders. More than 400 bird species have been
recorded, with such colourful common residents as the lilac-breasted roller,
yellow-throated longclaw and bateleur eagle joined by a host of European migrants
during the rainy season. Hippos are the star attraction of the pair of pools
situated 5km north of the main entrance gate, supported by an ever-changing
cast of waterbirds
After breakfast, depart to Nyerere National Park (Part of Selous Game Reserve) with packed lunch, across Uluguru Mountain and the photografic areas, experiencing cultural villages passing through Matabwe gate Selous, check in for dinner and overnight at Selous River Camp, basing on full board basis
The
Selous River Camp is located near the border of the Reserve and has
beautiful view on the river. Accommodation is in self-contained mud huts. Each
unique mud hut was built using material sourced locally and built by local
craftsmen using traditional techniques. The thatched roofs and mud walls keep
the mud huts cool during the heat of the day and help the Mud hut blend into
the surrounding bush. The beautiful rustic furniture and decor inside the rooms
were all made by hand in camp, mostly from natural materials found close by.
Bedspreads and curtains are all made by our local tailor from Tanzanian Kitenge
cloth. The rooms are softly lit in the evenings with paraffin lamps.
After
breakfast, set for a half day game drive in the Park. Return for
lunch, enjoying afternoon boat trip along the great Rufiji River. Dinner and overnight at Selous
River Camp, basing on full board basis
Few other safaris in
Tanzania evoke the romance, mystique and spiritual delight of the African bush
as one in the Nyerere National Park (Part of Selous Game Reserve). Embracing 54,000 square km of
south-western Tanzania, it is one of the largest protected wilderness reserve
on the continent, three times larger than the Serengeti and twice the size of
Belgium. Named after the legendary 19th century explorer and hunter Frederick
Courtney Selous, the reserve was founded by the German colonial administration
in 1905. It was later expanded to include traditional elephant migration routes
and accommodate the vast herds of buffalo that roam this remote, untouched
corner of Africa.
After breakfast, depart to Kilwa, check in at Kimbilio Lodge, basing on Half board basis
